Finasteride (Generic Name - Proscar, or Brand name - Propecia)is a drug used to treat male pattern baldness. It belongs to a group of medications - Propecia - and is used to reduce hair loss in men with male pattern baldness. It is also used to promote new hair growth. Finasteride works by blocking the effects of a chemical messenger called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a hormone responsible for the shrinkage of hair follicles in men with male pattern baldness. Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

At the end of the 90s the pharmaceutical giant Merck made a very public publicredit on the effectiveness of finasteride (generic prescription drug) available to women’s finasteride tablets (30mg, 60mg & 70mg) and all of them went to a pharmacist at the local pharmacy. Now, Merck is cutting the number of these patients in to a total of four.

There are no official information available on these patients, but a pharmacist at the local pharmacy in September said: “This is a public safety decision that will be made by a pharmacist at the pharmacy.”

The decision follows the example of finasteride prescribing in a general practice setting, where patients were prescribed a single 5mg tablet over a four-week period. The patient then went to the pharmacist and he said: “Finasteride is very effective and works great for around 90% of the patients.”
